The forty-five-minute wait in the dismal coffee shop near the Tube is torture. There are only so many emails you can reread, messages you can reply to, and Twitter feeds you can follow when your mind is half demented with thoughts of the man who slept with you and hasnât been in touch since. By the time Leo arrives, Iâve drunk three cups of coffee and Iâm caffeinated to the hilt.
âHi,â he says, pulling out the chair opposite mine. It scrapes loudly on the linoleum floor. âKat sends her apologies. She had to rush off to her final dress fitting.â
âRight,â I say, containing a laugh. Itâs such a plausible reason to anyone who doesnât know her, but to me itâs the most blatant excuse to give us some space. âDid you find somewhere suitable for the photos?â
He shakes his head with a little puff of resignation. âItâs not the most inspiring of venues.â
âEven by Katâs standards itâs pretty basic.â
âBut weâll make it work.â
Weâll? Does he mean him and his assistant, or is he referring to himself and Kat?
Thereâs a pregnant pause between us. I reposition the small vase of artificial flowers.
âIâll grab a drink. What would you like?â he says, when the moment becomes uncomfortable.
To know whatâs going on here. âNothing for me, thanks. Iâm fine.â
He returns a few moments later with a large black coffee. My caffeine high has diminished, and the vibe between us feels less stilted.
âHow have you been?â he asks. His eyes are full of warmth but he keeps his seat pushed back from the table, a safe distance apart.
âOkay.â
Bea, donât play it cool. Charles didnât. He told Carrie that he wished theyâd rung each other. That she ruthlessly slept with him and never called. You can do the same.
âThough maybe a little confused,â I continue.
âAbout why I havenât been in touch?â
âRight.â
âIâm sorry about that, Iâve been meaning to, but I thought it might be better in person.â
Alarm bells start clanging in my head.
âWhat might be better in person?â I ask, not certain I really want to know the answer.
Maybe Henry was right, maybe it is kinder to be kept in the dark.
âYou remember my assistant, Brit?â
As if I could forget. âUh-huh.â
âOur relationship is, like I said, complicated.â
âRelationship?â
âWe work together but we also . . .â
Thereâs a slight pause, while I feel my heart sink.
âWe also have a kind of onâoff relationship.â
âOkay,â I say, my voice tight. Aunt Jane would not be impressed. âAnd were you on with her when weââ
âNo,â he says, quickly. âDefinitely not. But she messaged me that morning, and I had to go. Not just because of her but because . . .â He falters. âLike I said, itâs complicated.â
âAre you with her now?â
He nods. âIâm sorry, Bea. I didnât mean for you to be caught in the middle.â
âI donât feel caught,â I say, using my best imperious tone. âIt was a bit of fun, thatâs all. Weâre both grown-ups.â
Even if I do feel like running home and hiding under the duvet.
âIâm glad you feel that way.
